GLP-1 Medications and Your Skin: How to Keep Your Skin Healthy During Weight Loss
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Zepbound® have helped many people achieve significant weight loss and improve their overall health. As an esthetician, my focus isn't on the medications themselves—it's on helping clients care for the changes they may notice in their skin during the process. If you've recently started a GLP-1 medication and your skin suddenly feels different, you're not imagining it.
Why Does Your Skin Change?
Weight loss—especially when it happens quickly—can affect the skin in several ways.
Some clients notice:
Increased dryness
Skin that feels thinner
Loss of facial fullness
More noticeable fine lines
Dullness
Dehydration
Increased sensitivity
Many people refer to the loss of facial volume as "Ozempic Face," but it's important to understand that this isn't caused by the medication damaging your skin. It's largely the result of losing the fat that naturally supports facial contours, especially when weight loss occurs rapidly.
The Good News
Healthy skin isn't just about facial volume. When your skin is well hydrated, your barrier is healthy, and collagen is supported, your complexion can still look vibrant, comfortable, and radiant. This is where a thoughtful skincare routine can make a real difference.
Focus on Supporting Your Skin Barrier
During periods of weight loss, I recommend simplifying your routine rather than adding more products. Look for ingredients that support hydration and barrier function, such as:
Aloe vera
Hyaluronic acid
Ceramides
Squalane
Glycerin
Panthenol (Vitamin B5)
These ingredients help replenish moisture and strengthen the skin's natural protective barrier.
Peptides Become Even More Important
One category of ingredients I especially like during this time is peptides. Peptides help support the skin's natural repair processes and can improve the appearance of firmness over time. While they won't replace lost facial volume, they can help your skin look healthier and more resilient.
Don't Forget Antioxidants
Vitamin C, green tea, and other antioxidants help defend your skin from environmental stress while supporting a brighter complexion. These ingredients work best when your skin barrier is already healthy and hydrated.
Professional Treatments That Pair Well with GLP-1 Weight Loss
Not every facial is appropriate for skin that has become dry or sensitive. Some of my favorite treatments during this stage focus on restoring hydration and supporting skin health rather than aggressive resurfacing.
These may include:
Customized hydrating facials
Oxygen infusion treatments
LED light therapy
Gentle enzyme exfoliation
Barrier-repair treatments
Facial massage to encourage healthy circulation
The goal isn't to "fix" your skin—it's to help it adapt comfortably while your body is changing.
What I'd Avoid
If your skin has become dry or reactive, consider temporarily reducing:
Harsh scrubs
Frequent chemical exfoliation
Overuse of retinol
Alcohol-heavy products
Overly fragranced skincare
Less can truly be more while your skin is adjusting.
Your Skin Is Adjusting, Too
When people begin a GLP-1 medication, they're often focused on the number on the scale. But your skin is experiencing the journey as well. With gentle skincare, consistent hydration, daily sunscreen, and treatments that support your skin barrier, you can help your complexion stay healthy throughout your weight-loss journey. Every client's skin responds differently, which is why I believe skincare should always be customized—not only to your skin type, but also to what's happening in your life.
