How Thyroid Medication Can Affect Your Skin (And Why Your Skincare Routine May Need to Change)

Have you ever noticed that your skin changed after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition? Maybe it became drier, more sensitive, or seemed to lose its healthy glow. Some women also notice puffiness, rough texture, thinning eyebrows, or that their complexion just doesn't look like it used to. If you're taking thyroid medication, you're not alone—and it's important to know that your skin changes may not be caused by the medication itself. More often, they're related to the thyroid condition being treated.

What Does Your Thyroid Have to Do With Your Skin?

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that produces hormones responsible for regulating your metabolism. Those hormones also influence many functions of your skin, including:

  • Oil production

  • Cell turnover

  • Blood circulation

  • Collagen production

  • Wound healing

  • Hair and nail growth

When thyroid hormone levels are too low or too high, your skin often reflects those changes.

Hypothyroidism: When the Thyroid Is Underactive

Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is one of the most common thyroid disorders, especially in women over 40. Even after beginning medication, it may take time for your body—and your skin—to respond.

Common skin changes include:

  • Dry, flaky skin

  • Rough texture

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Pale or dull complexion

  • Puffiness, especially around the eyes

  • Slower wound healing

  • Brittle nails

  • Thinning hair or thinning of the outer eyebrows

If you feel like no moisturizer seems to work anymore, that's because dry thyroid skin often needs more than moisture—it needs help repairing and protecting the skin barrier.

Hyperthyroidism: When the Thyroid Is Overactive

An overactive thyroid affects the skin differently.

You may notice:

  • Warm, flushed skin

  • Increased sweating

  • Skin that feels thinner

  • Facial redness

  • Greater sensitivity to heat

  • Increased irritation

Because the skin barrier may also become compromised, gentle skincare is especially important.

Is It the Medication?

For most people, thyroid medications such as levothyroxine aren't directly causing skin problems. In fact, they're replacing the hormone your body needs to function normally.

However, several things can happen during treatment:

  • Your body may need weeks or months to fully adjust.

  • It can take time for your skin to recover after hormone levels stabilize.

  • If your dosage needs adjustment, your skin may continue to show signs before other symptoms improve.

  • Other hormonal changes—such as perimenopause or menopause—can overlap with thyroid disease and affect your skin at the same time.

If you notice sudden or significant changes in your skin after starting or changing your medication, it's always a good idea to discuss them with your healthcare provider.

How to Support Thyroid-Affected Skin

The goal isn't to fight your skin—it's to support it.

I typically recommend focusing on:

✔ Gentle, non-stripping cleansers

✔ Rich, barrier-supporting moisturizers

✔ Hydrating ingredients like aloe vera and hyaluronic acid

✔ Peptides to support healthy-looking skin

✔ Daily sunscreen to protect an already vulnerable skin barrier

Avoid the temptation to over-exfoliate or use multiple strong active ingredients at once. Skin affected by thyroid disorders is often more reactive than people realize.

Professional Treatments Can Help

Customized facials can be especially beneficial for clients with thyroid-related skin concerns. Treatments focused on hydration, calming inflammation, improving circulation, and strengthening the skin barrier can help restore comfort and radiance without unnecessary irritation. Every treatment should be tailored to your current skin condition, not simply your age or diagnosis.

Healthy Skin Starts With Understanding What's Changed

Your skin is often one of the first places your body tells its story. If you have a thyroid condition, your skin may simply need a different kind of care than it did a few years ago. With gentle products, consistent hydration, and treatments designed to support your skin—not overwhelm it—you can absolutely have healthy, comfortable, glowing skin. At Mud & Lotus Skincare, I believe skincare should work with your body, not against it. That's why every facial is customized to meet your skin where it is today.
