🎗️May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.—but it’s also one of the most preventable.

Here are 4 types of skin cancer to be aware of:

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma – Waxy bump or scar-like lesion that may bleed or crust.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma – Firm red nodule or scaly patch, often sun-exposed.

3. Melanoma – Dangerous type; look for moles that change shape, color, or size.

4. Cutaneous Lymphoma – Rare cancer that may look like a rash, patch, or thickened skin.

Your best defense? SUNSCREEN. Apply SPF 30+ every day and wear protective clothing and hats when outdoors.

The ABCDE rule helps identify signs of melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer:

A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other.

B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred.

C – Color: Varies in shade—brown, black, pink, red, or white.

D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).

E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or behavior (itching, bleeding).

If you notice any of these, get the spot checked by a dermatologist promptly.

*Though estheticians are not able to diagnose skin diseases, we are an extra set of eyes between dermatologist appointments and can document unusual patches of concern for you. Early detection saves lives.
