Skincare Trends I Do and Don't Subscribe To

I love seeing people get excited about skincare, but not every trend out there is healthy, effective, or even safe for your skin. Some are just marketing buzz.

Not Every Trend Is Worth Following — and Here’s Why

I love seeing people get excited about skincare, but not every trend out there is healthy, effective, or even safe for your skin. Some are just marketing buzz.

🚫 Trends I skip (and why):

Botox & Fillers – These are quick fixes, not long-term skin health solutions. They don’t address why your skin is aging, and in some cases, can even create structural changes you might not love over time. Does this mean we won't vibe because you get monthly botox? Absolutely not! It helps with migraines and some people do have spectacular results with it. I personally would just put my money into a good twice daily skincare routine and a monthly chemical peel for the same results. No migrating filler or frozen face here!

Beef Tallow – Low in linoleic acid (something acne-prone skin actually needs) and offers no proven benefit for skin barrier repair. It can clog pores and feel heavy without giving true nourishment. For a more detail, check out my post on Linoleic Acid in Skincare to learn more!

Dial Soap – Harsh detergents strip your skin’s protective barrier comprised of acid and sweat (The Acid Mantle). When the sebum (oils) are stripped, your body will overcompensate by producing excess oil which causes breakouts. Long term use can lead to chronically unbalanced skin.

Slugging – Occlusives like petroleum jelly sit on top of the skin; they don’t penetrate to deliver nutrients. For many skin types, it can trap bacteria and lead to congestion.

Primitive Skincare Hacks – Things like NO routine, water only, lemon juice, baking soda, and toothpaste on pimples might sound “natural,” but people often don't realize those things change the Ph of the skin and leave the skin barrier susceptible to long-term sensitivity. For example baking soda, is used to neutralize a chemical peel. If you use this to clean your face, you are creating an alkaline surface on your skin when it should be acidic.

EXAMPLE: (baking soda has a ph of 9, while lemon juice has a ph of around 2-3....but your face is balanced at around 4.5ph - 5.5 ph) Not knowing the chemistry behind the skincare can easily disrupt your skin and throw it out of balance.

Snail Mucin – While it’s trendy, it can be a common irritant, especially for reactive skin, and doesn’t offer anything you can’t get from more stable, proven ingredients. I have personally heard many accounts of estheticians using this product and breaking out horribly. This is a skip big time.

✅ Trends I do follow (and why they work):

Microbiome Health – A balanced skin microbiome protects your barrier, reduces inflammation, and helps prevent breakouts naturally.

Holistic Skincare – Skin doesn’t exist in isolation—it is the LARGEST ORGAN of our body and it reflects internal health. Things like stress, diet, hormones, and lifestyle must be addressed to get the whole picture of what it affecting your skin. This creates lifelong results and overall better health and wellbeing.

Skin Cycling by Season – Adapting your routine to the weather means your skin gets what it needs, when it needs it—more hydration in winter, more antioxidants in summer—reducing irritation and improving resilience.

Peptides – These are truly life-changing for skin texture and firmness, signaling your skin to make more collagen and elastin.

Acids (used wisely!) – From lactic to glycolic, acids can address fine lines, uneven tone, and congestion quickly and effectively—without harsh scrubbing.

Gua Sha – This ancient technique uses uniquely shaped tools to gently move lymphatic fluid throughout the tissues under the skins surface. This leads to less puffiness, a sculpted look and zero invasive measures.

Spicules – Micro-sized natural “needles” from sea sponges that oxygenate, exfoliate, and deliver external growth factors deeper into the skin for faster cell turnover.

Skincare should work with your skin’s biology, not against it. My focus is on treatments and homecare that protect, repair, and enhance—not on fads that look good on TikTok and leave your skin compromised.

💜 Your skin deserves more than a trend—it deserves a holistic approach that focuses on long term skin health.
